He was a Romanian dictator until 1989. He had been killed by the Romanian people on 25th December, 1989. Strange is that, although generally he was a bad man, he made some good decisions too. That's why some people from Romania still regret his death.

First of all Ceausescu was a Communist dictator who ruled Romania not only in the '80s. In 1965, Ceauşescu became first secretary of the Romanian Workers' Party, and in 1967 he consolidated his power by becoming president of the State Council.
In 1974 he became the first president Romania ever had.
Between 1866-1947 Romania was a Monarchy
Between 1947-1989 Romania was a Communist Republic (it was named The Popular Republic of Romania (1947-1965) and The Socialist Republic of Romania (1965-1989)).
Between 1989 - until now Romania is a Semi-presidential Republic.

Because of internal causes, in December 1989 started a Revolution, first in the Romanian town called Timisoara, and then in Bucharest - the capital of Romania. Only Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena Ceausescu were murdered on 25 December 1989. Their children were not killed. After that Romania became a democratic country and still is today.
