The conflict is between wanting to live, grow, travel, and 'be all that he can be' versus staying in the community, taking responsibility for family and missing out on the grass on the other side of the fence.
When he tries to commit suicide, the situation is exactly reversed: He wants to commit suicide so his family can survive on the insurance (responsibility) vs. the 'selfishness' of living.
The 'happy' ending is that he gets to have both because his selflessness over the years has made a lot of friends who are willing to give something back to him.
Utter horse hooey in the consumer world that marketing has created in the culturally devoid anonymity of suburbia.

The conflict in "It's a Wonderful Life" is the question of whether or not George Bailey's life has been meaningful. It is a personal conflict that Bailey is going through, which nearly leads him to suicide. He is the personification of the Henry David Thoreau quote that "most men lead lives of quiet desperation," in that he has been tortured the mundanity of his life, nearly to the brink. He knows that he gave up the more adventurous life he had planned, but at the time of his attempted suicide, he does not realize the effect his boring life has had on his friends and neighbors. Because of his sacrifice, he was able to help a town full of people. Thus, the conflict is resolved when he comes to understand that.

The conflicts are...do you help your town
or be selfish?.. do you make your mark in a big way or become a so in so in a small town? I mean..in the end George Bailey had the chance to see what life was like without him... IF he wasn't there so many people would have been sick, killed or never shown what good people they were.

Life lessons are learned and killing yourself just creates sorts of new problems that last for generations. Mr Bailey felt like a no one..but he created a wonderful life because he saw the countless number of friends he had.

The conflict is that the main character George Bailey has to come to terms realizing that everything in life isn't about what you have but who you are. He has to learn that just because he didn't go to school, or travel, or take the fancy job etc., he really has a "wonderful life". It's meant to show you that money and possessions aren't the answer to happiness. Friends and family that love you, and living well are the answers.
