Jan 1 is the first day of the year because that is the way our calendar is arranged, but your follow on comment makes no sense, because 12:59am is New Years Eve Morning, not nighttime.

But it works out though pretty cool actually because we get like a whole week off of work and stuff because of Christmas.

January 1 is the first day of the year by convention. That is, any day could have been picked, but this one was chosen. It is probably related to the old Roman calendar when the counsels year-long term began.

Other dates have served as the first day of the year. In the Middle Ages, Easter was the first of the year, but that later became impractical as Easter changes from year to year. At some point, April 1 was the first day of the year. Legend has it that when January 1 was chosen to replace April 1 as the first day of the year, those who refused to accept that were called fools by those that had accepted it. Hence, the origin of April Fool's Day.

Hope that helps.

Not all calenders have the date January one as the first day of the year. Only what others call the christian calender. It can be any day of the year. Here the new year celebration takes place in April. In China it varies around February. Most nations have accepted the Christian calender as the one used for business and reference to prevent confusion.
