i think it depends on the pet. sometimes you can name them when you see them. maybe by a marking on the pet or it's personality. your new cat or dog could be "spaz" because ...he is. ya know. I have a freind who dog don't really eat alot, but we always call her piglet, she's a pug and she norts. Like I said, sometimes their own charetor will name themselves. Another friend had rabbits, they were boots, mittens, and sox. All multicolored but all with different colors on the tips of their feet.
My sister had parakeets, this is funny, i think. One continuously landed on my step dads shoulder and he always pecked on his glasses, by the ear....then they eventually broke.. we called him pecker. And his birdy friend was just a crazy bird. His name was tweek. He'd fly and like dive down at things, he'd talk and tweet for hours at nothing. when he saw himself in the mirror, he say oh no oh no and try diving into the mirror.
Good luck. Hope I helped!!

most people give there pets names by there characters, or personality, I called my cat tiny, cause she sat in the palm of my hand even though she was ready to leave her mom, but now she,s 6 & she aint tiny no more.

A good pet name should reflect the characteristic of his/her master.
Do I misunderstood your question?

I hit a dog that was chasing my car on my way to work one morning. I ended up adopting her and paying for her outrageously expensive vet bill. In the course of this, her right hind-leg was amputated. When she came home, my husband said we should rename her "Eileen"
