When we were in high school we decided that we were not right for each other. We parted great friends and over the years took up other lives with other people. Doing our own thing and crowning our own deeds.

I had married twice and been pregant 5 times, losing 3 children while pregrant. It is difficult to loose a child and I also buried one husband.

When he came back into my life I didn't recognize him though there was something about him. He recognized me immediately. He had one of those average faces, but a smile that could light up a room and eyes that danced with delight over the smallest of things. He had a heart that was good and wonderful, he showed kindness to others even when he didn't like them. He was giving to the point of driving me crazy.

He could dry my tears with a joke, he could make me smile with a gesture and I fit snuggly in his arms. It was like we had not parted all of those years ago. It was like there never had been anyone for either of us. We did not sleep together before we were married as the old ways are not easily changable to people who beleive in them.

We could speak by looking into each others eyes and we knew what the other was thinking.

I loved him deeply as he did me. We prepared for our long overdue wedding only to find the families against us. We in our 50's were having to answer to children and mothers and sisters and brothers about our love with little understanding.

It was frustrating.

Our worlds were different the cry was, yet neither of us had a great deal of money. We hadn't known each other long enough they beesched us to think longer about it. We had gone together for 19 months and we knew that if we went together for a lifetime we would still love each other - that was not going to change.

We scraped the church wedding. We exchanged vows to each other in the peaceful solitute of the woods that were by my home and let God be our witness.

The next morning as we drove to the town where he lived, to drop of his car as we were going to elope to Las Vegas and make it offical. A farmer in his Jon Deer tractor came out of no where and slammed into Jeffery's car. I watch and I saw with horror as it spun out of control and slammed into a walnut tree. I ran to him and pulled the door open with effort and he fell into my arms.

He reached up and wiped a tear away and said, "This dying is harder on you than me." He was right. The world doesn't sparkle the way it did once and the sun doesn't shine as bright.

I wrote a poem about this called, I would Change the Ending. It helped a little but I still cry and I still miss him.

The luckiest think that ever happened to me was having him back in my life and I wouldn't change one moment, one kiss, one hug for anything. I would only change the ending.

Aside from not freezing to death once; I'd say all the times I'd climb cliffs by myself without any climbing gear.
Thinking back on those climbs, it's a wonder I'm still here.
