Ok here is what all you will need

1. At least a gallon fish bowl (They now have like 5 gallon desk tanks which are really nice, especially for a betta)
2. A fake plant close to the color of your fish (they love to hide in those, plus it reduces stress for the fish)
3. Some colored pebbles again close to the color of the fish
4. Water
5. Wardley's Betta Fish pellets (all of mine love that stuff)
6. A betta fish!!!

I have gotten all of mine at wal-mart and I have learned what to look for in a healthy betta so here is what you do.

First off, look for fish that have bubbles around the top of the water. Those aren't really bubbles and being male bettas I can let you figure out what those are. Those bubbles though are a sign that they are happy and healthy. So put the bubbled water fish on one side and the non on another.

Now from that bubble pile, start looking for white spots on the fish or eyes that have bugged out. Those are signs of a disease which will mean it will be costly to fix it. After looking for that tap on the bowls. If the fish moves, tahdah you have a good fish! Also when it moves, look at the fin. If the fin looks like someone has torn it really well don't get it.

So out of that pile that isn't sick and moves you can pick from them. If a fish when you tap on the glass flares out (aka puffs out his gills) he's a really good choice as he is really happy. So I hope that helps you out some!!

Try Wal-Mart. I got my first Betta there and he lived for 6 years in a half-gallon fish bowl on my desk. I tried buying a Betta from Petsmart but it died in 2 weeks. I just recently got a Betta from Wal-Mart and have had him for about 3 months now and he is doing GREAT. I've got him in a round half-gallon tank and he seems quite content.

Care -

Feed it only once or twice a day and just a small amount. I prefer the Tetra BettaMin Tropical Medley, I've tried a couple of different kinds and like it the best, because it has a combination of flakes and freeze dried brine shrimp.

Change the water about every 2 weeks, and rinse the bowl and the rocks with hot water, never use soap in the tank it will kill the Betta for sure. Get some kind of Chlor Out, it neutralizes chlorine and chloramines in tap water, that way you don't have to buy any special water.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your new Betta ; )

Pretty much any aquatic livestock store carries bettas.

You need to know that you should not keep them in the little bowls that the store may provide you with. Bettas fare much better in filtered and heated tanks (at least a 2.5-gallon) with room to swim, some plants, and hiding spaces.

You will also need to do water changes weekly if he's in a filtered tank. In a bowl, you'd need to do daily water changes just to keep his ammonia levels down. Also, dirty water leads to more illnesses (fin rot is common in bettas, and sadly, it's usually because of poor water conditions so it's completely preventable).

Bettas are also meat-eaters. They don't mind the betta pellets you can get at any pet store, but they do prefer a little variety. Look into getting some frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp. They'll love you forever.

Good luck!

EDIT: To the person posting below me, you keep your betta in a half-gallon bowl?? And you only change the water once every two weeks? Do you have any idea what the ammonia buildup is in there? I'm surprised he lived longer than a month!

Seriously, if you're going to keep a betta in a bowl, you will need to do DAILY water changes just to keep his water healthy. You're much better off buying him a small tank, filter, and heater (as bettas are NOT coldwater fish).

Petsmart or Petco because there will be people specialized in fish there that can help you get everything you need, but not walmart because they tend to buy fish that are sick and do not take very good care of them
