I have bought many unlocked phones on ebay. You have to be sure the phone you want is compatible with your carrier (i.e.: ATT, Cingular, Verizon, etc.)
I only had to put my sms card in it. I already have Cingular and just wanted a different phone. I have NO trouble at all with them.

Better know how to program it/ sync it with your service provider. SMS and MMS settings ect cause they don't come with it. 2nd the warranty is way shorter than your service provider offers.
