Jane Eyre was our first reading assignment in the 9th grade. I loved it. That was 25 years ago now and it is still one of my favorite books.

It's got a nice fairy-tale, happily ever after thing going. It's also got a lot of interesting things to say about Christianity (though it disses on Catholicism a bit--just a sign of its time and place). One character explains god as "universal parent" which struck me as rather progressive. There's a lot of snappy dialogue once Rochester is in the picture.

Don't watch the movies. The only one I saw was wretched.

I did enjoy it, but then I'm an English teacher. However, that does generally make me a harsher critic. I like that Jane was not just a mealy-mouthed mouse. She stands up for herself, though her taste in men is questionable. And wait until you get to the crazy, biting lady in the attic! I recommend it.

There is also a fairly recent movie that you can rent. The book is a literary classic that you should not dread having to read. Lots of juicy stuff in it!
