why not? they eat dogs too....kinnda even up eh? beside these there is the tiger balls and testicles, rhino horns, bear paws, rats and whatever that moves. delicacies....yumm-yummy! dont you eat beef? mutton? chicken? turkey? gotta hate yourself too, eh??

It's not actually so much b/c of poverty as it's a result of living in a famine region. When the land is dry, and little to nothing will grow on it, people find every edible thing around them - be it plant or animal. That's why the food of china has such a broad spectrum - bird's nest soup, cat, etc.
This does not make cat, or anything else, a standard part of chinese diet, or even used at all today. What it means is that, at some point in the past, they found it necessary to make use of the fact that cats and dogs can provide nourishment.
Yes, China is growing richer, which is wonderful and helps now that more people rely on buying food rather than farming it themselves, However, what has also contributed is the modern ability to ship food quickly and preserve it longer. Food can come from other countries, or farther away regions, if the land in one area isn't producing.
It's great that you asked the question, but next time it would be even better if you actually listened to the answer before judging the people.

What kind of question is this? Why? For your information don't tell me all Chinese people like eating cats or dogs. Soo mean eh? Do some research before going all out and saying this kind of garbage. In some countries, food are very limited, you eat what you got. We may think eating cow is fine, have a nice steak dinner but to other parts of the world, they think your eating something they wouldn't touch. It's the same thing, get some knowledge in this before speaking your mind!! Sheesh.!!!

Not ALL of them do, and - as someone else pointed out - Chinese people aren't the ONLY ones who eat whatever is available!
It may surprise you to learn that China has an acute shortage of cows, sheep, and pigs. Chickens WERE on the increase, but avian flu has forced people to destroy lots of them. So you have a country where most of the edible animals are dogs and cats. What's the big deal? YOU might think that it's a shame to eat dogs and cats (I do too actually,) but please be reasonable! You only think it's okay to eat beef because it's part of your CULTURE!! Chinese people don't have the luxury of choice that you do, so eating dog - and rarely, cat - became part of their culture. But they are eating less and less dog and cat as other options become available! As China becomes richer, more people are having dogs and cats as family pets, and less people are eating them! Surely you think it's GOOD that consumption of dogs and cats is dramatically going down!?!
So don't hate them, wish them prosperity so that they don't NEED to eat dog & cat!!

How is a dog or cat any different than a chicken or a cow? People in the west have attachments to "cute" animals, so you see other cultures as mean or barbaric. It is not. It is just another source of food. Many places in the world are not blessed with more than enough food, as we are, so they eat what they can.

They don't eat "cats" as in fluffy, cute feline pets--They eat civets, which are a member of the cat family but you wouldn't want one as a pet unless you want your house smelling of musk and your throat torn out in your sleep.
The problem is not that they eat cats (or dogs, or snakes) but that the cats are very inhumanely treated prior to being butchered.
btw, deciding that you "hate" an entire culture based on a iignorant and erroneous idea of what they are like is a textbook example of racism. Not the PC idea of racism, but the honest-to-goodness 100% real thing.

Not ALL chinese people eat cats, and it's not JUST chinese people. in many other countries, including latin america, very poor people will use anything they can for meat. it's not that they are mean, just that they are poor and hungry. i'd eat cat if i was hungry enough, and i love the cute lil things

Unlike in industrialized countries- there's not alot of food for chinese people. Cats is more common than broccoli in China and it is food so you eat it. Its not a buffet over there.

I've spent a lot of time in China and I have never seen anyone eating cat meat.

how can you hate people because they eat cats it's stupid...perhaps they gonna hate you for eating what you eat...
they are not the only one who at cat, do you remember world war or any other war... ?
people at mices,rats dogs and cats,...snakes everything when they were hungry...it's only after those painfull memories that common sense decided to declare that chicken, pork rabbits,... were the meat we should eat it was less humiliating
