You might mean "independent contractor." The definition and terms are spelled out in around 2, maybe 3 paragraphs by the
U. S. Department of Labor. Basics are, the company / employer
can only give and dictate a certain amount of direction, and the contractor does a not so much directed job for a fee. There is a 2 or 3 paragraph department of labor and legal definition.
