First, it is way too early for the nut meat inside to have ripened. That will happen in fall. The skin around a black walnut hull is used for dye and can stain your hands or concrete pavement. Wait till they drop in fall and gather them up. Use heavy gloves when the skin dries ....probably november.....or sooner if you notice it is seperating from the nut inside. Now...black walnuts are very tough nuts and it is a lot of work to get the nut meat. Having said that, it has a very unique taste. Use a hammer, or some people use a lawn roller on a smooth pavement to at least crack them. Some people will float the nut meat and hull crackings in water I think. The hull floats and the nut meat sinks but don't quote me on this....I just use a hammer.....and do a few nuts at a time. Have fun. Oh, and not to give you any bad ideas, but growing up in Kentucky, us boys used to have black walnut battles.....they can hurt when they hit and our moms used to go (excuse the pun here...lol) nuts when we had walnut battles.

It would be a good idea this fall when you have a lot of them to put them in the oven and roast them for about 15min./med. heat. They, as all fresh nuts, tend to mildew and that spoils the taste.
I have a special nutcracker for them but it is a real chore to crack them and pick out the nut meats. We don't have them here in California but they are available for from $10 a pound on up.... depending on whether you want them shelled/cracked or not. Makes all that hard work cracking them seem pretty good.

Picking them off the tree is fine as long as the green husk has fallen off or is cracked open. If there on the ground pick them up as soon as possible. Buy a nutcracker from your local grocer crack em and eatem!!

I don't do anything with them. The squirrels love them and manage to do a good job of cleaning them up for me. It makes them happy, and they are fun to watch.
