I am buying a red eared slider for my mom tomorrow from a coworker ( I work at a pet store) and I am putting him in my really big terrarium. In my terrarium I have 2 baby bullfrogs, 2 firebelly newts and 3 dwarf frogs. Is the slider going to eat the dwarf frogs? The slider is pretty small about 3-4 inches from head to tail. I am just wondering if they can all coexist in my tank since I have never had a slider. Thanks for any info!

He will eat or kill all your other pets, if not now, very soon. They grow like weeds!! Plus, sliders are pretty foul. He will need frequent water changes and a high power filter. AND a very warm basking spot out of the water, with a UV bulb. The heat he will need will be way too much for the newts(possibly the frogs, too).

Sliders make good pets if their care needs are met, but they do best outside. Their space and cleaning needs are quite a chore if kept indoors! You can find good care sheets and other advice at www.kingsnake.com

THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA..... I have 2 red ear sliders. They are aquatic turtles and therefore should be kept in an aquarium or pond, not a terrarium. RES are very territorial and anything put in the presence of the turtle should be considered food. And another thing, RES have to be in water to swallow because they do not produce enough saliva. You really should do your research before buying an RES. They require alot of time and alot of money. Their habitats have to be very large for proper care. A general rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch of shell, not including the curve. So if you have a turtle with the length of 3-4 inches, that's a 30-40 gallon tank, and you would have to upgrade often. A female RES can grow up to 12 inches, that would be a 120 gallon tank. PLEASE do plenty of research before purchasing a red ear slider. They require more than you believe. And please check out the following web site, there is tons of information and you can ask questions there. Lots of good people to help.

They will eat them. I had 2 red eared sliders, and I couldn't put anything else in the tank with them, because they'd eat whatever it was. Also, I don't know how much water is in this terrarium you have, but remember that red eared sliders need a lot of water....they have to eat underwater.

Most people overfeed their turtles, shortening their lives. If the turtle is fed all it will eat in a short time, 3-4 times per week is plenty for a two-year-old. As it gets older, feedings can be cut back. I would recommend more water, though. The water should be kept around 80°F and the basking site about 10° hotter.

A female RES frows up to 10-12" and male RES grow up to 7-8" SCL (Straight carapace length). They are an easy species to keep, but they are very territorial and EXCELLENT hunters. Do not keep any animal you wish to alive with them. They often turn on each other as well.

A 5" RES would need a 50G tank by itself filled completely with water. As they get bigger 7-8", they'll need more space to swim and need a 100G tank or better a pond.

RES are so cute and sold by the millions and often they are abandoned and dumped. I would not buy a RES, there are so many unwanted RES in the US and the world. Check out ANY reptile rescue in your state, they will undoubtedly have RES and iguanas. Need more information about adopting RES, check out Turtle Homes and they have affiliate local groups.

Here is a caresheet for RES:

I currently keep 1.2 RES and run a private RES rehoming program in my city. I found homes for 5 RES last year. They don't make good pets, b/c they get huge and need a large pond or tank.

You bet he'll eat them! They are very adept hunters and love to chase down and catch live food in their tanks. I put a rather large catfish in one of my young slider ponds to help eat algae and one of the smaller ones went right after it. That poor catfish lasted an hour. Some of the others enjoyed his parts too.

Sliders can be pretty aggressive... Even if he doesn't eat them now he'll grow... Definitely not a good idea in the long run... those would be some pretty expensive snacks.

hte turtle at this age, won't eat them; but as it gets bigger it will eat or injure the newt or possibly eat the dwarf frogs. i've had salamanders, crawfish, and snails with my sliders and eventually they ate everything but the aquarium. good luck.
