In the future, put a vinyl mattress cover over the bed (the kind that is waterproof and you zip over the entire bed, you can buy them at Kmart.)
I personally suggest that you chuck the mattress if it's a really big area and soaked in. Otherwise, uncover the mattress, and wash it with bleach/detergent. Spray Febreze over it to get rid of the odor. Since it's summer, drag the mattress outside and air it out in the sun for a few days. If the urine soaked deep inside the mattress it might be very difficult to get of the smell.

Using a garden hose and an old floor brush or scrubbing pad, wash affected area with a strong but hypoallergenic powdered detergent. After making sure that no detergent is left, place the mattress on your lawn/cemented pavement/garage floor and leave it to dry under the sun.
From experience, the heat not only helps in drying the soaked mattress, it also helps in removing the putrid smell of the pee.
Hope this helped! :)

Have it professionally cleaned with a steam cleaner, that's what I do when my kids pee the bed. If it is a common problem I would get a plastic mattress cover to protect the mattress

Call your girlfriend and tell her to go the pet store and pick up a gallon of Nature's Miracle. It's got enzymes in it that "eat" organic material. Takes the smell and the stain (mostly) out of the mattress.
