A Governing body of international basketball
The abbrevation 'FIBA' derives from the French 'Fédération International de Basketball Amateur'. The Word 'Amaateur' was dropped in 1986 after the distinction between Amateurs and Professionals was eliminated. The 'A' in FIBA was however left. This was for reasons of tradition and also because of the 'BA' at the beginning of our sport, BASKETBALL!

International Basketball Federation or in French: Fédération Internationale de Basketball
It governs the world championships, region championships, Olympic qualifying, stuff like that. It was founded in Geneva in 1932, for a while James Naismith, the founder of basketball, was its honourary president

FIBA = International Basketball Federation
It will be a truly international league like Soccer (European Football) currently is. Competition starts in the middle of August 2006. The League is Headquartered in Geneva Switzerland. The United States ranked first in the FIBA ranking and are leading the role of honor in almost every FIBA competition.
