How to make and maintain a fish aquarium?

Here's the basics to maintaining a tank: you have to do is get the fish, feed the fish according to the intructions on the feed, clean the tank when it gets filthy by putting your fish in a bucket and changing the water and wiping the tank and cleaning any decorations you have (monthly or weekly), and if your fish ever get sick, do some research. It's less trouble than having to drive to the vet. After researching just buy the medicine from a pet store. If you seriously can't find the disease then go to the vet. That's all you really need to know. Oh, don't forget to buy water conditioner because fish can't live in regular tap water. When you clean out the tank remember to add the water conditioner to the water. Plus, you should always have a net so you can catch them when you need to (for example, when you want to move your fish to a bucket so you can clean the tank) Also, you should make sure the water temperature is right for the fish. In that case, you should get a special thermometer which you can stick at the side of the tank. If your fish are supposed to live in warm water, get a heater. Plus, a filter is very important. I've heard that it keeps the fish alive (because some fish need water that is constantly in motion.) and it helps keep the tank somewhat clean. So, that's the basics. Hope you can manage. My suggestion is that you get goldfish. They prefer cold water so you can just use cold tap water treated by water conditioner. I know all this from experience. : ) I used to have 6 goldfish.

not too many fish(2 inches of fish to a gallon of water).

Do not over feed what ever a goldfish will eat in five timed minutes, not more, once a day.

Remove any left over food, so that it does not rot in the tank and poison the water.

An air pump and an air stone (not an absolute requirement if you have plenty of water for not many fish but certainly desirable for putting air into the water and taking poison gasses out)If your fish are swimming around at the topof the water and gulping air you need an air stone and pump.

A filter system ( again not needed for a larger tank with few fish, if you clean out the wast in the tank carefully, but if you have a filter and it is set right you can avoid cleaning and changing the tank for weeks and even months at a time, in a few cases even for years) you must change and clean the filter material from time to time.

Do not add snails or too many plants, snails cause much more pollution than they will ever clean up.

Indirect lighting, if the tank is where the sun can hit it, it will heat up very fast and that is not good for the fish.

Talk to some one in the aquarium store, they might be able to help.

Hope this helps, it is about all that I know about small fish tanks

You have to set up the aquarium and take samples of the water to make sure the ph and stuff is correct. Buy some fish that are easy to raise-guppies, neons. You have to establish your aquarium before you put any fish in it. Go to Petsmart or Petco and they will tell you everything you need to buy and how to do it.

There are companies that set up and maintain aquariums for offices, etc., as well as handicapped people, or anyone who for one reason or another cannot maintain an aquarium on their own. Ask someone in a local pet store/aquarium store for some names. You can also look in your yellow pages.

wash the tank, wash the pebbles the goes with it when they start to get cloudy. when you put water, make sure you put the anti-chlorine type drops in the water. let it sit for a while before you put in the fish. make sure too that it's the right temperature.

If you cannot manage an aquarium, you don't need one.
