Well, first you have to make a choice. Do you want to keep them or do you want to throw them away? Only after you have made that choice can you move forward on this matter. Anyways, if you are keeping them, just make sure that you organize them because when you do that, you'd know what things are still worth keeping and what things can already be thrown away. :)

Box them up, label the outside, then do one of two things:
1) Put the box up in the attic for several years. When you rediscover it you will either gain a new appreciation of the contents or wonder why you ever thought such junk was important.
2) Take the box immediately to the local thrift shop.
They may be able to unload some of the stuff and earn much-needed dollars for a worthy cause.

You can always donate them to a charity. Most charities will pick them up for free. As far as personal items like letters and photos, you might want to sort them by importance and give the important ones to relatives.

Sort it out and if I can't remember who is in the photo or where I got the nicknack, out they go.

To avoid getting cluttered in my rule of thumb is this:
Except for seasonal items such as Christmas ornaments, etc. if you have to store it, you don't need it. Dispose of the stuff. It is swallowing you.

Have a yardsale. If you price things reasonably, there's every chance that you can make a little cash. Otherwise there's places like Amvets, Good Will, or Purple Hearts.

Donate them to an organization that will give them to people in need for free, or to the Goodwill.
