I need the specific reference - I see where it is attributed to Maslow but no specifics as to where and when he said it, if indeed he said it

From everything I've seen, there is no specifics on the origin of the quote (I just have google, no books in front of me) However, the quote seems so famous that you can quote it as is and be fine with it.

another way to do it is to quote the source that you attribute it to (it may not be the original, but if you are taking the quote in the same context, it works)

This text says he "commented", which is probably a hint that it was orally.

It was written by Abraham maslow, but was changed quite a bit. Originally it said "I am such a tool, no wonder I never nail anyone," eventually it changed when he got married.
