Defining the best "muscle car" tends to leave few competitors. The Dodge Viper would have to rate up at the top in terms of power whereas cars like the Camaro, Firebird, Cudas, Mustangs and Darts were more popular due mainly to the affordability.
Porsches, Aston Martins, Lamborghini, and also BMW have also been noted for cranking out powerful muscle type cars.
If it's a sports car your looking for, then you'd have to go into the lines of MG's, Mazda Miata,Corvettes (convertibles), all the way up to the new Pontiac Solstice.
Every person out there has a preferance to what their idea sports or muscle car would be, and the popularity would be spread amoungst all cars made with sports or power in mind.
The 1967-72 Mustang Fastbacks by far were more popular then the Camaros and Firbirds of the same years, only to lose any ground gainned to them with the introduction of the Mustang 11 in 1973. That was an overblown Pinto in disquise and not a Mustang that car buffs appreciated.
Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds and Cougars as well as Cudas and Javelins were all basically 2 seaters with an added back ledge where a skinny kid could only sit for a short period of time, while GTO's, Chevelles, Torinos and Beaumonts were five passenger vehicles.
One would be hard pressed to turn down the oportunity to own anyone of those 65-75 classics where power reigned supreme and the girls were always pretty.
All those cars were great cars and even today, the Mustangs, Corvettes, and others, still get the adrenillan flowing when you hear the throaty sounded thunder rolling out the exhausts pipe.
I even get a thrill of the drive everytime I'm behind the wheel of my Dakota R/T.

1970 Chevelle 454 LS-6 is KING of the muscle cars 450hp 500ibs trq - you said "musclecar" not factory racer or aftermarket dealer frankenstein(yenko chevy) or some BRAND X that came with parts in the TRUNK ,to get around warranty and insurance.Musclecars are generally defined as compact (camaro, mustang,'cuda) intermediate(chevelle, cougar, roadrunner) and some full size cars with the most powerful engines available.there are some obvious exceptions and some NOT so obvious ones-corvettes,cobras,and the AMX were two seat sports cars and were classified as such by several sanctioning bodies, caddy and chrysler and lincoln were luxo-barges and wanted no part of it,eventhough they carried as big or BIGGER engines in some cases. Also the MUSCLECAR ERA was 1965-1970 with power falling incrediblly in 1971 due to emmission controls then the 1973 oil embargo put the last nail in their coffin-Hot Rod Magazine in their feature article on the 70 LS-6 began it with"The past is gone and the future will never see another car like this again". they knew it was over-they had seen the elephant

For me it would be a 1969 COPO Camaro (9561) with the L72 427 engine. This car could do 11 seconds in the quarter mile with slicks and traction bars. I knew a guy that had one with the three two barrel carb setup from a corvette on it, one of the fastest street stockers I've ever seen.

I would have to say my documented original 1969 Yenko Chevelle. Only 99 produced, only 22 known to exist. Although I suspect more are out there. Mine is one of only 12 with the Automatic tranny, and is one of the highest optioned Yenkos produced. I do intend on putting pics on my home page so check it out when I get it done.

this question is asking an opinion based on nothing unless you ask more specific. Power to weight, resale value, style, cult following.
Hemi cuda (Power to weight), Yenko Camaro (resale value), Shelby AC Cobra (Style) Camaro or mustang (Cult following)
