because we're dumb

I know what you mean. Someone expressed surprise one day when I walked into an office where I worked and said that I had a sunburn. On top of it I am not a dark black, I am so light my ex's family, when seeing photos of me for the first time asked why he married a white person. I guess it simply has to do with ignorance. To some, I guess the intensity of color in some blacks gives the idea that the skin is of such thickness that it can withstand anything. Don't be offended, enlighten them.

Not realizing that black people sunburn isn't a racial slur, it's just cluelessness. I have to admit I was totally surprised when a black pal of mine told me she had a sunburn--I was thirteen years old, and I'd had no idea! I think this is a common problem because black folks don't turn lobster-red when sunburned the way we white folks do. We think that if one hasn't turned red, then one isn't sunburned. Oops.

.. well, everyone wrote 'ignorance' but I don't know.. I think that's too simple of an answer. I've been to Mexico (and the uv rays really DO s*ck down there man) and noticed the darker skins turned rather red. (So heck, I did notice the sunburned look.) I am not totally positive white people do think black skin 'doesn't burn' here. There are a lot of erroneous racial (slurs) floating around. (Some think they cannot get tattooed.. can't see the flippin' things!) What's a racial slur blacks think about 'lily white skin?'

People tend to be ignorant and they believe that because Blacks have dark skin and they can't see it, it doesn't happen. It's not that hard to figure out why whites would thing that blacks don't tan or get sunburned.

Because you cannot see the sunburn on a black persons skin. Just ignorance really.

Because the sun makes white people turn brown, but black is already beyond brown.

I think it is because black people are already dark skinned, they cant get tanned

Because to them, it is hard to see the tan occuring, as opposed to a lighter skinned person. They're not being racist by this deduction it's just they honestly DON'T KNOW.
