I first thought it was because of Matarazzi holding him back. But many people here say that it was because of an insult Matarazzi said to Zidane.

The Italian player was holding on to Zidane causing an argument which must have involved the Italian player saying something very offensive.

Well they had been playing for a long time. So maybe the pressure got to him and a little remark made him attack. I don't blame him. Matterazzi is a jerk face, so I've heard. And it did seem like he was talking to Zidane, and Zindane really didn't want to talk to him, and so he ran away from him, and then Matterazzi seemed to say something behind Zidane, which obviously caught his attention. And made him attack. Only God, Zidane, and Matterazzi know what was said. And I blame it all on the Italian insulter.

Zidane was known in Italy (he played with Juventus) as having a short fuse and was once penalized for a portion of a season for responding with a headbutt to a provoker.
Materazzi knew how to get to Zidane, former Marseille hero, and the short fuse put Italy in the direction of triumph.
Whether or not the player was instructed to provoke Zizou will remain speculation for some time.

Football players have been called names, been tackled viciously, and even endure racist comments! but for god sakes you dont charge any player with your head no matter what! doesnt matter what the italian said to him! Zidane should know that in games like this you have to keep your head on and obviously he didn't! won't matter if even the italian player said the worse things to him! when you are a professional you don't act like a moron! was he abused verbally? i am sure he was! did he deserve to get the red card? he definetly did!

I don't think he did it intentionally, Zidane is a great player and he knows it, he knows he is valuable to the team and I do not think he would do it intentionally.
Lets give him the benifit of the doubt.

he hit the italian player because he had a bad temper.
there is NEVER a valid reason to hit someone. unless they hit you first or threaten your life.
i doubt the italian player said anything to him that threatened his life.
but i also don't think he hit him that hard enough for the italian player to fall. i thnk the italian player exaggerated the headbutt.
