Since you didn't define deviance, I guess I'll provide my own definition and go on from there. Deviance is the act of differing from a norm or from the accepted standards of a society. Let me illustrate a societal norm with a simple + / - line. Everything on the plus side is an improvement over the norm while everything on the minus side is behavior that tears down what is considered good. x = the currently accepted norm.

-____________x____________+

I'm a medical researcher, develop a cure for cancer and AIDS. My actions would probably put me to the right of the x in the eyes of the patients, family members, etc.

But, those same actions (of finding a cure) might put me to the left of the x in the eyes of the pharmaceutical companies who are now looking to lose billions of dollars of revenue every month.

I deviated from the norm. I'm a hero to some and a traitor to others. What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses of deviance?

There's so many differences that it would take quite a long time to discuss them. Since deviance means different from the norm I have to ask, who is normal? From all my research, we're all insecure and desire more.

There will be many instances in life where I certainly want to fit in but then there will be many others when I don't.

Anything that closes the gap between the way you see yourself(self image) and pure love is a step towards a greater you. At times this may likely require deviance which is ok. Because if you become closer to pure love then you contribute to society.

So, since I believe the deepest desire of every human is to be loved, I say a strength of deviance is when it brings a person closer to being loved and a weakness is when it takes you further away.

Deviance usually denotes negative and socially disruptive behavior
leading to criminal activity. As such, the weakness of such a mind set is the corrosive effect one's deviant actions has on society. Any strength would come from those who fight against it and its affects.

As a non-conformist, I suppose I qualify as a deviant. I believe some strengths of deviants include : 1. higher self esteem than average 2. independent thinking 3. strong will ....... Weaknesses would include : 1. inability to sit still and be quiet in a classroom 2. inability to "go along with" in order to "get along with" other people 3. lack of social status
Hope I understood you correctly. Thanks for the question and Good Luck !
