I have heard Dyson's are good - what is so great about them?

I used to work in vaccuum sales. Dyson is unique because it doesn't use a filter. Filters clog the air stream and make the vaccuum less and less useful as time goes on and the bag gets full.

That being said, the difference is like-- "do you really need a tornado or a room fan?" A good canister vaccuum cleaner, changing the bag regularly, will do the trick. Avoid uprights-- they have about 30% of the suction of a canister.

Spend about $199. Go to Sears. With mostly hardwood floors, a light duty vaccuum is fine. If you have pet hair, upgrade!!

My mom has mostly hardwood floors also and she uses a Kenmore canister vacuum. It works aw some on bare floors and carpets. They are a little pricey but are definitely worth the expense.

Get a Dyson, they're pretty colours! lol.

Oh and they never break, they are super-easy to use and empty, they remain very powerful for at least the first couple of years of use and even older dysons work pretty well.

I have a dirt devil dynamite. its a compact vac that is really strong and about $50. We've had ours over a year with a fully carpeted house living with 2 dogs and 2 cats and it still works great. No bags and the filter is changed every 6 months.

get one of those Roombas that do everything automatically. my friend who has a big house with all hardwood floors has one and she loves it.
