The gas produced when hydrochloric acid is reacted with ammonium carbonate is carbon dioxide:

(NH4)2CO3 + 2HCl ---> 2NH4Cl + CO2

Note: Ammonium carbonate is smelling salts. It decomposes at room temperature and will smell of ammonia BEFORE the hydrochloric acid is added:

NH4)2CO3 ---> 2NH3 + CO2

I hope that this fully answers your question.
