Perhaps he feels there is no practical application for Philosophy (and he may have a point, I know 2 people with philosophy degrees, one works the counter at a tobacco store, and the other is a barmaid), or maybe he doesn't understand it very well, and it makes him feel dumb when you talk about it. Since he wants you to sell your books, maybe he thinks they take up too much room. Keep reading, knowledge is priceless. Just don't do it around him.
Stop discussing philosophy around him, keep your books in your room, and try to keep discussions with him to topics you know he approves of, nothing weird or 'deep'. You may see that as not being true to yourself, but it WILL make your home life better.

If you read philosophical texts, it shows that you have a healthy and inspired love of learning, and a desire to better understand the world around you. Philosophy at its most basic level is a study of learning and knowing, and therefore you're primarily expressing a desire to know what is known or conjectured. I believe that it is always healthy and empowering to be informed on any issue that you feel concerned with, no matter what the material might be.
Your Xfather may be concerned that your philosophical studies are undermining his ability to control you, or your behaviour, and realistically it is a threat to him (or, more appropriately his power and control mechanisms) in that context.
Although there hasn't been a Universal Human Right to Read it's generally the accepted norm, and if you are of an adult age, your Xfather has no right to prohibit you from reading anything you wish to. If you are a child, however, your father does have the right to limit your exposure to any material that he finds objectionable, or outside of the value system that he is raising you in. There are, however, kids help lines that can help you address this issue if your father is abusing you physically, or mentally and emotionally.
It might be important to have continued dialogue about the issue, and if your Xfather has ongoing issues with your readings, perhaps you can agree to not discuss these issues with him.

If you want to read Philosophy, then more power to you! The great philosophers force you to think, to follow their logical (and at times illogical) arguments, and to ponder on the deep questions and problems of life and the universe. What is the nature of reality? Is there a God? If your Xfather needs a more mundane explanation, tell him that many liberal arts college courses deal with philosophy and reading those texts are a requirement. The study of philosophy is also good training for the careers of law, sciences, ethics and teaching. Is he upset with you because you are getting better at arguments than he is? Perhaps he is losing at arguments or doesn't want to argue the "big questions" with you or disagrees with you?

No. Unfortunately many people misunderstand the goal of Philosophy. As a discipline. philosophy teaches one the rigors of thinking through problems. It develops a broader view of life, widens the narrow minded. It helps to straighten out your thinking habits and resolve inconsistencies in one's thinking. As a result philosophy is a very profitable enterprise. There is a brand of philosophy, though it is not true philosophy, rhetoric the ability to pile it high and deep and not make any sense. Plato had that problem with the Sophists, they gave lessons in rhetoric for exorbitant fees, but it was time wasted.

Philosophy can be fun and enlightening causing one to think outside boundaies. This being said, a person can get too deeply into it and offend others way of thinking and living. You can also misinterpret ideas and stray from the mainstream which isn't always a good thing. Family should always be first no matter what. If your father feels that Philosophy is distorting your views, he is probably right and you should respect that.

Well, your mind is not screwed up!! Why is he your X-father? Is it he that could not stand to be around intelligence? Philosophy makes a person go above and beyond any limits. There is nothing wrong with you wanting to learn more and more. Please, do yourself a favor, don't sell your books. I would buy as many as I could. As long as you are still learning why not? No matter what age you become there is none of us that will ever stop learning. So, you my dear, go on reading on!!!!!!!!!!

I think you talk too much or ask too many questions.
Otherwise, how woulf your father know what you are reading?
Philosophy is the thinker's toy. It can preoccupy you. Don't let it rob you of your life.
Doers do as thinkers think and think as thinkers think they do and do as thinkers thought they did.
Your father is a doer. Deal with it. He's only trying to look after your best interests. He's afraid you are breaking away from him. You are. Give that some thought the next time the two of you talk.

I suggest that your Xfather try a rehabilitation course by reading an introduction to philosophy text book, and, then, return in a 500 word paper to you for grading.
