Congratulations!!!!! How wonderful.....

Since a name is a gift to a child...it can either be a blessing or a curse. Here's some things you may want to think about before bestowing a name to your precious bundle of joy.

1. Avoid trendy/popular names if possible. A child certainly doesn't feel special when they're are known as Caitlynn S. at school because there are 3 other little girls all bearing the same name. This also ties into.....

2. Avoid the most popular baby names list.....don't look at it, don't even ask to look at it. My mother-in-law had no imagination whatsoever. She had two children....and both of them have the most popular name on the list for the year they were born...Steven in 1965 and Jennifer in 1971. Guess how many other children carried the same moniker? Too many to count.

3. If possible have a list of potential names of both sexes to chose from before you give birth......and I learned the hard way...don't share it with your pregnant friends! A 'supposed' friend heard my first choice for a girls name, then had her daughter two weeks before mine.....then USED my favourite name from MY list. I wasn't impressed.

4. Avoid rhyming names. If your last name is Ferry then your daughter Mary or her sister Airy are probably going to get a lot of teasing in school.

5. Avoid names with difficult spellings or prounounciations. Your child will spend their whole lives 'educating' the world on how to spell or say their name. You're thinking it's different now...but it's going to be a pain for them.

6. Keep an eye on the future. A name may be cute when they're kids but as adults it's a different story. Would you really want to buy insurance from someone named Galapagas Jones? Or take a lawyer seriously who has been 'blessed' with the first name Virgin?

7. Have a look at your own family....if the girls on both sides of the family tend to be dainty little girlie-girls then feel free to give them a really feminine name. If you all were athletic, big boned and never saw a dress until your wedding day, then more than likely a really frilly name like Anastasia Mercedes is going to be a total mismatch. It's like calling a boy who's genetics tends towards little men Brutus and then expecting people not to snicker. A tough name doesn't alway mean they'll 'grow' into it.

8. Personally I favour strong names for girls as I believe women are affected by their names. It may be stereotyping but I have yet to meet anyone name Sarah that wasn't soft, quiet and totally feminine.

9. And finally....do not name your child while you're under the influence....I have experience with this one. My daughter was born via an emergency c-section. When I came out of the anesthetic they pumped with me enough morphine to knock down a horse. I then named my child while having visions of seeing the Madonna (and I'm not talking the singer here!). It did work out as her name perfectly suits her...although the family joke is that she was named after the wallpaper pattern I had selected for the nursery (this is totally true...I couldn't make this kind of stuff up). It could have gone horribly wrong so a word to the wise....get off the morphine drip before you bestow your little darling with a 'handle'.

As for suggestions....if I was having a girl today, these names would be on my list:

Solange (pronounce So-lounge)
Nevada
Dakota
Carty (A family name)
Angelica (Another family name)
Syria

Good Luck and Congratulations again!

Lucy is the usual English form of the Latin Lucia from 'Lux', 'light'. In Roman times the name was often used for a child born at dawn and the goddess Lucina was the patroness of childbirth. Other forms are Lucette, Lucinda, Lucasta and Lulu.

Hannah

Hannah comes from the Hebrew meaning 'God has favoured me'. In the Old Testament it was the name of Samuel's mother. The Greek form of this , Anna was used first and Hannah was not adopted in England until after the Reformation.
