A lot of new mothers have concerns about how much milk their breastfed baby is drinking. Since we have no way of seeing how much goes into the baby, many of us wonder: 'Is it enough?' Maybe it will reassure you to think of breastfeeding as something most babies can control by themselves. By three months of age, a robust baby will have the capacity to obtain a full meal in a reasonable length of time. You will sense that your breasts feel full before feeding and softer afterwards. The baby will act satisfied. These are good signs that the feeding has been successful.
Seven feeds a day is a nice average for a baby three months of age. Some of her daily meals may be short snacks, some even briefer feeds may simply satisfy the baby's thirst needs. Most babies of this age will have a feed or two every day where they linger at the breast, and enjoy a long cuddle.
It will probably be useful for you to look at some other aspects of the baby that will help you determine whether her feedings are adequate. Babies usually double their birth weight somewhere between 4-6 months. So if your baby is healthy, happy, meeting developmental milestones, and gaining about 1 oz a day (about 2 pounds each month) she is just fine. Her rate of growth will begin to slow as she approaches the 4-6 month time frame. This is normal and is why breastfed babies have some protection against childhood obesity. They grow fast early on - slower later.

I hope that this has helped. Good Luck and Congrats to you!!

At 3 months I think my son was drinking about 20 oz of formula a day, maybe a little more, that seems so long ago now. He had it evenly throughout the day because he was sleeping through the night by then. We usually had about 3 hours between bottles and about 3-4 oz per bottle.

If you are concerned especially since your son only feeds during sleep you really should ask your doctor for suggestions and for how much he should be drinking a day. I was more concerned that he didn't have too much formula a day and gain too much weight as he was already a big boy and grew fast from the start.

Babies don't eat standardized amounts of milk based on how old they are. The rule of thumb is to offer as many ounces of milk as the baby is old (3 months- 3 oz) at each feeding, but babies vary so much that one baby might drink a couple of ounces every hour and another might take 6 ounces every four hours. And at 3 months the baby is growing so she might want more milk one day, or another day want nothing but sleep. Babies sometimes "stock up" on milk for several days, then eat hardly anything while they sleep for several days and grow using the energy from the extra milk they drank.

The best way to tell if the baby's getting enough milk is to count the wet diapers. If the baby is wetting 6-8 diapers a day, she's getting enough.

Half of his weight--for example, if he weighs 10 pounds then half of that would be 5. He should be taking 5 ounces at a time every 3-4 hours.
