Most people don't realize that it takes roughly 3 generations before things can move on. That's anywhere from 200 to 300 years before all sides can forgive and forget.

Why?

The 1st generation lived through it. They have the scars.

The 2nd generation, the children, see the scars and hear the stories 1st hand. It's still an important part of their life but not as much so as the first generation.

The 3rd generation, the children's children, hear the stories, maybe 2nd hand, and may see the scars on occasion. It's something in their lives but nearly so as with the 1st and 2nd generations.

By the 4th generation, the memories have almost faded.

If we take Martin Luther King, Jr as the turning point, it won't be until 2140 to 2240 that memories will fade and life can move on.

That's why in the Bible, God punished to the 3rd and 4th generation. To ensure that the sin was eradicated from the family.

RE:
After 400 years of slavery, do white people really believe that 40 years of rights makes up for it?

nobody said that 40 years should make up for it. But what's done is done. You can't change what happened. However, what do expect is for everyone not to hold grudges and anger over it for the next 400 years. most of the people alive today have nothing to do with what happened then, yet you still want to blame them. What are you blaming them for? I'm pretty sure that they aren't the ones who enslaved your ancestors. Notice I said ANCESTORS. not you. So why are YOU mad? I'm not saying that we don't have out faults, because we do. But you have to remember that when they went to africa to get the slaves, they were buying them from their OWN people. And they were black. It was all about money. try to lighten up a little bit and let go of the anger that is aimed the wrong people.

And don't take this answer as me being angry. I'm not. In fact I've asked a similar question. I'm just giving a simple answer.

No one alive today, including white people were alive during slavery. No one thinks it was right, but how long is long enough to make it right to you? What would make everything okay to you? How much money would be enough? Slavery is over and has been over with for a long time now. I don't know what it's like to own slaves so how can you REALLY know what it was like to be a slave?

White people have also been slaves. Why do black s think they are the only race to ever have been in slaved.. And NO! I don't think that makes it right. You can trace most ethnic backgrounds and find slavery in all races. Stop whining about what was and make what is now better. Make sure No One is ever a slave again.

A lot think that, but I actually think that the ones that do don't know how long black people have had rights. They think we were given equality after slavery ended.

I am a white person whose ancestors came here from Scotland because they were being oppressed and enslaved. Do I feel animosity towards British people? Hell no. Do I feel guilty or think I owe black people anything because I'm white? No I got better things to think about like my and my families future. I can care less if black people think they are owed something. Tell it to Jesse Jackson, it's what keeps him in business.

Where do you get the time frame of 40 years? Slavery ended in the mid 1800's.

As for the question of does 40 years make up for it, man cannot fast forward time to create a longer span of years since slavery occurred.

Slavery was wrong. It was abolished in the United States. Segregation occurred, but that too was ended with Brown Vs the Board of Education. Further advancements have created a society in which black people have the same opportunities as whites.

I don't think it is at all fair for African Americans today to hold slavery against comtemporary white people. I had no control over what my ancestors did to yours.

You seem to have confused the unofficial apartheid America operated until the 60's w. slavery that ended much earlier.
If you're still labeling people by colour then you are perpetuating problems that you proport to be against.
