There are a couple of different standards. Primarilly 802.11b and 802.11g

In general, you want to go with the newer and faster 802.11g

I have had the best luck with LinkSys.

wireless NIC = Wireless Network Interface Card. It's a piece of hardware for your PC to be able to connect wirelessly to a network... and from the network they can also connect to the Internet usually.

I've found http://www.cnet.com a very good resource for comparing hardware. I've had Dlink, Linksys, and Netgear equipment. I must say that I like the Netgear the most.

wireless nics are cards that allow you to connect to a wireless network.

The site I go to to compare cards (and other computer hardware) is http://www.pricegrabber.com/
