It is an egyptian riddle fabled to have been asked by Sphinx . The answer is a human.
When a baby it crawls on his hands and knees making the four legs in very young stage, on two when he becomes a adult able to walk and on three when he becomes old and starts staggering while he walks - he uses a stick to support him and that is his third leg without which he can not move when very old.

This is the riddle the sphinx asked in mythology. The answer is a human - we crawl in all fours when we are babies, two legs as we become older, and use a cane for a third leg when we are old. I love this story, but I haven't heard it in so long! I'm so glad you asked

Having read all of the answers already given, I thought I might add (and correct) a little bit.

In Greek (not Egyptian) mythology the Sphinx sat outside the gates of the the city of Thebes and allowed no man to enter unless he could answer the riddle. Oedipus was able to give the correct answer. It is man who crawls as an infant, walks upright as an adult and uses a cane when old. The Sphinx was so upset that she (a Greek Sphinx was a lioness with the head of a woman, wings, and human breasts) that she threw herself from her perch and died. The people of Thebes (the Greek one) were so happy that they made Oedipus their king. He subsequently married Jocasta, the queen, with whom he had four children. This leads ultimately to great tragedy.

This is all part of a saga which follows Oedipus from birth to death. His story is told by Sophicles in three plays, OEDIPUS REX, ANTIGONE, and OEDIPUS AT COLONUS.

the answer is man, it is the riddle of the sphxnx. legend says if you walk in it's shaddow, the sphynx would ask this question, if you did not answer correctly you would be eaten.
however the question should read " what walks on 4 legs in the morning, 2 legs in the afternoon and 3 legs in the evening?" these are the ages of man.
