Yes, because he did that because of a harsh insult coming from materazzi... You can see... Zidane starts walking away, then suddenly jerks his head around, and just heads him in the head, the right thing to do for a man in his position.

I don't care what anybody says, what Zidane did was totally wrong and disrespectful. Materazzi might have said something really hurtful to Zidane, but if you are a living legend and a highly respected player such as Zidane, and playing in the greatest world tournament in the final, you can overlook insults because a true legend focuses on the next goal! Seriously, if Materazzi really said something so bad to Zidane, Zidane should have just said 'ok you'll see' and scored a goal instead of acting like a barbarian. France also lost because of Zidane's actions because Zidane would have definately made a penalty kick. What a shameful way to retire from football - with a red card in your last game which happens to be the World Cup final, in which, your team loses. Such an embarrassment.

I think it's unfortunate that Zidane chose to head-butt Materazzi. I would have liked to see him (Zidane) play through the entire game, but I have to agree that what he did was red card-worthy. As a team captain, he shouldn't have done it and he let down his team. However, I don't really blame him for doing what he did. On a personal level (forgetting the team) I probably would have done the same thing.

I don't think it's proper for Zidane to do what he did on that field. But, if you were in his shoes, I dare say after playing 90-min well into OT, you were tired, and being a world class player for so many years he couldn't even get the respect he deserved from a fellow opponent, anybody could snap. The Italian player was equally very wrong and should be responsible for his action.

If Mothrfckerazzi called Zidane a terrorist, completely understand the reaction; 10 minutes left and running on empty, the game clearly headed for PK’s, he saw the need to stand up to that sort of skulduggery. Six months from now, the only thing we’ll remember of this game is Zidane teaching this scumbag a lesson with the Dive Team’s win on PK’s a statistic.

Remember when the 16th Round games started, the major slogan was " No to racism"; well in Europ it's bullsh...Did you ever wonder what Zidane was told? Cause his North African background, that guy has worked hard, 10 times harder than any other great European player. Growing up as a son of a North African immigrant in the streets of Marseille and make it all the way up to be the most expensive player in Soccer History is not that easy. there is one thing Zidane can't tolerate is some dirty cheap Italian player being racist with him. I'm sure the French people are not worried about the cup as they are about Zidane who in fact is going to retire as a true soccer god. Anyway those crybabies Italians are the only soccer fans in the world that still throwing banana skins on black players even those that play for the Italian ligua. Shame!!!
The last decent world cup that the Italian had played was the 1982, when Italy had real men like Zoff, Paolo Rossi, Altobelli...Now days they have actors, crybabies and whiners...they do all it takes cheating, crying, falling, and even being racist to win. No mather how things went ugly for zidane, he will always remembered as a Soccer God.

Yes a player like Zidane has not demonstrated in the past that he is an irational human being. I am convinced that whatever was said must have been deroagatory to the higest degree.
I am almost certain that it had racial overtones.
Although it does not excuse anyone to react so violently.
I think his action was to send a strong message across the world
to all of us that as the bible say, we must not provoke the other person to wrath.
On this basis he was prepared to be sent off and give up his right to any claim of MVP in this world cup.
One's dignity must stand above all other matters.

that head butt gave me more respect for him. He showed the world dont mess with France and you need that as a captain. He could have gotten away with it if they didn't replay it on the big screens because I highly doubt that the sideline ref saw that. He has been very good these past three games at the world cup and he ended his career on a high note. Sure his team didn't win or he get to finish the game but France wouldn't have been there without him. During the Brazil match he played like he was 20 years younger, he controlled the middle of the field and with that helped give France the win over Brazil. Hell he even got the assist on that sick *** kick to Henry for the winning goal. During the Spain game he was able to step it up (along with other teammates) and win 3-0. One thing and you guys bite his head off. During this game he hurt his shoulder and still continued to play, he wanted to help his team. Sure that head butt wasn't the best thing to do but don't hold that against him, he's one of the best players in the world.

Depends on what we're respecting him for. I will always respect his ball skills but I can't respect his inability to control his anger in heated situations. The commentators said that Zidane stomped on a player's back in the '98 cup. I thought this was an isolated incident but now I'm starting to think the guy needs anger-management.
