I am using Macbook Safari net browser. How can you tell the internet is a secure site when using Safari.?

Internet Explorer has a little "lock" icon that tells you the site is secure. Safari does not have that. How can I verify I am surfing the secure site when using Safari?

The little lock is on the top right corner of the window (to the right of the Window title).
