It's a tradition. It started when painters used mostly white paint.

AlphaFemale is right. I used to be a residential painter (interior & exterior) and my boss told me to wear a white T-shirt, white painter's pants & a baseball cap to work. The less paint I wore, the more skilled I was perceived to be.

It used to be a matter of pride to be able to paint a house and leave with the pants still white. It showed skill at the job.

Most of the paint they use is white, so it doesn't show as much.

for the same reason we feel the need to put on retarded looking overrals when we paint. were dumb.
