Depends. You have legends like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix etc. If you're talking about now a days, it obviously depends on genre, metal has split into several categories:
Black metal - Venom, Immortal
Power metal - helloween, blind guardian, gamma ray
epic metal - rhapsody
death metal - not really sure but maybe Morbid angel and such
progressive metal - dream theater
grind metal - Tool
this is not complete, and some of those are combinations of genres for example Blind Guardian being really Power Epic Metal.
