And why did the Communist leadership in these countries view Buddhism as a danger and suppress religious expression?

Most countries that go Communist do so because of corrupt and/or oppressive dictator style rulers. On paper, Communism is very attractive, but in reality they all turn into dictatorships. That was the case in SE Asia, very corrupt, money hungry rulers, expecially in Vietnam. The Nu's (sp?) were comparable to Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette, in that they sucked the state dry and lived is excessive luxury.

Communism generally suppresses ALL religion, wherever it takes hold. Hence the problems China is having with both Christians and Tibetan Buddhists. They view religion as competition for the state, they want the people dedicated to the state alone, and any spiritual or religious expression is viewed as a distraction from that state devotion they want to cultivate.

Vietnam turned to Communism because the United States refused to help Ho Chi Minh drive the Colonial French out of Vietnam after WWII. The Soviets were willing to help and since they were communist, Ho Chi Minh followed suit. All Ho Chi Minh wanted was a free Vietnam ruled by the Vietnamese and not some other country.

Because those countries were primarily agricultural. The idea of an equal distribution of land amongst the peasant farmers was a key component of the Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Communists' platform.

So because of this idea communism became very popular among the common farmers.

This is also the reason why communism became very popular in South America around the mid 20th century.

Because the rebels who liberated these countries from France in the 1940s were led by communists. Communism sees religion as an evil.

Communists , as I know them in India, are among most deceitful peoples. They talk about great ideals and yet snatch power with meanest ways.

Talking about rights of poors and labour class and farmers. But I am yet to see a positive way they would try to achieve their goals.

An uncle of my mother's who lived in West Bengal India , before communists came in power there. He said , even walking on roads was dangerous. You were just walking and , and suddenly a flying soda water bottle would hit you on the head!

Its more than 25 years now of communist regime there. Bengal is still has seen no progress. Only people who got richer are communist caders. I have met people from WB , who say , polls are regularly rigged and only communists can get government services of state. If they suspect someone , that he is not that much of a communist, his days are over.

The Maoist communists have destroyed Industries in Bihar. TThere have been cases where communist terrorist cut thraots of villagers after kidnapping them. In really slow process , Halal style.

Orissa and Karnatak are also trying to fight communist terrorism.

They are hand in hand with imperialists when it comes to changing history.
They distort facts and twist reality to suit their purpose and say it is OK for greater good!

There working is really Taliban style. Just both of the organisation work for different ideologies, one for Islam another fot communism.

Both have highly educated high profile leaders along with cruel murderers. The only solution to every problem they have are "killing".

Talking about ideals makes them look good, to many people. But id you dare to disagree, only god can save you.

India is really fighting terrorism on too many areas. It is yet to be seen , how much it can take. Especially seeing that terrorist groups are well connected.

I do not know what methods they used in other countries to get power, but I dont think they had much different apprach there.

I'm not sure but I'm going to give it a try:

It might have to do with the fact that the people in these countries are dirt poor and to adopt a government that celebrates workers and the lower classes might be appealing.

These countries are still considered 3rd world nations.

Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam became communist because they didn't have any man who look half as good as J. Edgar Hoover in his dress.
