firecrackers contain gunpowder which when lit burned. The burning of the gunpowder creates heat which in turn makes the pressure inside the the firecracker to increase. This pressure pushes out the container of the firecracker. When the container breaks the pressure pushes the air around the container that creates the exploding sound.
