Here is what I do.

Keep your own Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.

Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an upexpected pop-up.

Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.

If you have Windows XP with SP2, activate the Windows firewall and check the status. If you don't, get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com

I use these steps to keep my computer ALIVE.

That's a bit of overkill, maybe, depending on what you do each day. If you access sites that may put spyware programs on your computer (such as porno sites), then you should run spy after every such visit. Also run it before you start any secure connection like email or bank or online purchasing. Once a day should be enough for most people.

i dont think it hurts anything, but to keep from having to run it all the time try finding a spyware blocker.i use verizon security suite it has firewall,anti-virus,ad and pop-up blocker, and anti spyware all in one.it works very very well.i run mine once a week but i clear the log every day to keep it from having to many on the log that shows what it has blocked.

You can run them as much as you want too!
But 3 or 4 times a day is a bit much, unless your going on sites where you DON'T BELONG.
