you've seen it. Everyone has seen it! It's a squggly thing, almost like a really wide "s", on the side of a hearse. I've also seen it on the side of a Ford Thunderbird, but Ford doesn't make hearses, do they? It's a question i've wondered about for years, but finally there's a way to ask such a question and maybe get an answer.

No, it's not a 'scroll'. It's called a Landau Bar. Originally it was the side bar to a convertible roof. The bar folded back on itself in order to let the roof come down. This why the Thunderbirds that had the bar were called 'Landau' models.
Ford does not produce funeral coaches, it does, however supply Lincolns to the funeral coach industry to produce hearses.

I think it is called a scroll! Yes i have seen them on hearses.

It's just an adornment.
Ornamental to make the appearance not look "boring".

I'm pretty sure that they serve no purpose, and are purely decorative.
