Were you embarrassed? Do you still think it's taboo to cry openly?

This question came up because of an incident I ran into. I was at the grocery store yesterday and witnessed a woman reprimanding her 2 or 3 year-old son for crying. She kept belittling her son by gruffly asking him repeatedly, "Why are you crying? Are you a girl? Why are you crying like a little girl?"

The poor boy tried so hard not to keep crying. I felt really awful for the boy and I was so tempted to put the mother into a headlock and sweep the floor with her face.

It got me wondering if this is still prevalent nowadays, this whole conditioning of male children not to cry in public.

yes i have!!!! i believe that if men would weep more from the heart they would not internalize pent up problems so much. Jesus cried in front of alot of people when saddened. You will also live longer and it is healthy for you!!

Well I guess you might consider me being out of line because I'm not a guy. But I can answer this question even if I am a woman. I have cried many times in public in the last year. I have many reasons to cry, one being I'm in love with someone whom I'm not with and it hurts to see or hear them. Just yesteday I wept openly in front of many people. It's not anymore comfortable for a woman to cry in public than it is a man. I deal with this often and the one whom I'm crying over can look right at me and see me crying as well. It's belittling and embarassing but I can't help it......

It's still prevalent. I know I still feel a taboo against crying in front of others. It's not rational. My parents never told me not to cry. It was just something I picked up from the culture.

Of course that mother was dead wrong on several levels. She'll be proud when she and her son wind up on Springer someday.

Wow, that poor little kid- he's going to grow up with a LOT of issues with a mother like that.

I'm not a guy, but crying in general is seen as a sign of weakness. It's unfortunate, but the only thing you can do is not to believe it yourself.

I am assuming it is. Just look at all the men today...

I feel truly sorry for that child. Crying is a healthy release of emotion-- nothing to be ashamed of! Personally I like to see guys cry. Not because I want them to be sad or anything, it's just nice to know that they have the strength to cry. That sounds like a contradiction of terms...but if you think about it, it isn't.

I'm not a guy but I think the woman is a bad mother....she's backwards. Guys should be able to just be. I think we'd have less issues if you didn't have to hold everything in.
