You'll need: paper, matboard, fabric/canvas, needle, heavy thread, glue/rubber cement.
Stack the paper (about 6 pages per stack) and fold. Make 3-4 evenly spaced holes in the fold with the needle or a thumbtack. Sew the stack together so that the thread is between all of the holes on both sides. Then you can sew each stack together by tying the thread at the top and bottom to the ones next to it.
Cut the matboard to a little bigger than the size of the paper for the front and back covers, and for a thick book, the spine also. Cut the fabric to be big enough to wrap the outside of the cover and fold about 1-2" to the inside. Leave a gap between the covers to allow for the thickness of the book. Gule the fabric to the matboard.
When dry, glue the first and last pages of the paper to the inside of the cover. This will cover the ends of the fabric to leave a nice finished look and secure the pages and the cover together. Happy writing.

you could get loads of papar together, fold it in half and then put a paper clip at the top left side, and one at the botom right side. Make a hold in the middle, top and bottom of the fold. then get a needle and thread. go through the middle hole and tie a knot in the thread. Then go through the top hole, back through the middle hole, through the bottom hole and then back through the middle. Then just tie the thread together and cut the remainder off.
Or if you want to do a journal for a long time, how about just buying a pad of lined paper, some plastic wallets and a file. That way you can keep adding to it and never run out of space.

I am a bookbinder myself. Rather than type out all the instructions here, I'll give you the link of an excellent site I've found. http://bookbindingfb.com/constructyourbook.html
If you're looking for something more distinctive, try Googling "Japanese Binding" or "Coptic Binding". You may also want to inquire at a local art supply or craft store to see if any classes are offered in your area. That's how I got my start. Good luck! It's a great hobby.

depnds on what you want to use the journal for - if it to be like a diary i would put it in a word document and set up passwords for your privacy - or perhaps try the blog websites on line
note: this also saves paper- good for the enivronment and can be backed up to a cd

Two peices of carboard, fabric (And/or decorations), string, paper. I think you could figure that one out. Put fabric over cardboard, put paper between carboard, tie cardboard, and voila!!
