It would be terrible for football for the four years before the next. Americans do not appreciate the sport and what it means to the world. Those who do tend to not cheer for US any way and given the countries current standing it would give the world some thing else to grummble about it.
Until the US as a people learns the importants of football and can reffrain from rubbing it in the worlds face like a spoiled child they should remain at the bottom. Focus on the home land before you go international.

First of all, no one in the USA would even notice.
Second, the rest of the world would fall into a stunned silence...and then wonder how much you paid the other teams to lose.
Third, it's never going to happen. Americans are losing everything, even the sports they used to dominate (like men's basketball). What happened in the Olympic basketball comptetition at Athens 2004? The United States dream team lost, and the gold went to Argentina.

Guess we wouldn't be considering moving to Europe so we could see some world class football more frequently than every four years. Not really but I'd love to see the sport really take off here.
