Most hotels have what is like a phone jack connection that you connect into - if your laptop didn't have one (mine did) you need to get a connection cable that looks like the phone jack kind to use at the hotel. I used this while I was travelling. Also a tip - get a cable to lock down your laptop if you plan on leaving it in the room while you are out and also make sure you password your computer so others cannot use it if you are not there.

clyde, if you want to use dial-up internet access in a hotel:
I assume your wireless laptop also has a phone jack in it (if so, then that means your laptop has a dial-up modem. if not you're out of luck and would need to buy a modem). All that you really need is a dial-up account. Try a free one like netzero by going to http://www.netzero.com. it's free but limits you to 10 hours a month. Once you download and install the dialer from there, it is somewhat self explanatory (just launch the netzero dialer and it will prompt you to pick a number to dial). You just need a phone cable (one which has a phone jack on both ends). one end plugs into your laptop and the other into the modem jack or directly into the wall jack at the motel. Also check if you need to dial 9 or 0 to get an external line at the motel and if so, you need to add that number before the number that you want the dialer to dial.
Good luck!

You need a 56k modem and (most likely) a dialup Internet account with a service provider. Your laptop may have an internal 56k modem. If it does, the next step will be to subscribe to some provider's dialup service and configure your computer to dial their number. Check in advance to find out if they have an access number near where you will be staying, because you (or the hotel) may be charged for long distance otherwise.
If your computer does not have an internal 56k modem (which seems very unlikely for a laptop), you can buy one at an electronics store.
The process of configuring a dialup connection in Windows is very similar to configuring any other connection; if I recall correctly, the same wizard is used for establishing different types of connections. You just have to fill in the blanks.

If you in a hotel, they offer wireless service right? Or at least they should offer something. If not, you should be able to find a national dial up service provider. AOL for example has numbers for every city in the united states. Maybe a provider offers a 1800 number? Do some research, google search a "national dial up" or something similar.

in addition to the modem,
a phone cord
make SURE they are not running a PBX
if you do and plug into that
you'll fry the modem if not the laptop
some PBX run on 96 volts
not the standard 24 the modem expects
if there phone system is all digital
it will not work
as the dial tone work only with their digital handsets in the room and the modem will not get any dial tone since the digital phone system computer will not see anything valid phone plugged in and ignore any analog requests ( like those from a modem ).

If you have Dial-up already...then all you need away from home is the phone cord..(cord that goes from the wall to the phone).
Providing your in your calling area....You hook-up and call from somewhere else and your going to have LONG DISTANCE or TOLL charges on someone elses phone.
If your out in a public place, you won't be able to hook up like that.
You could get a Wireless Internet Card, and check for HOT SPOTS which will let you connect for free...(some of them).
You can look up Hot Spots on yahoo.

To utilize your wireless functionality, you have to use a broadband connection (dsl, cable modem). If you are at a motel, just make sure that you have an extra phone cord with you and you can probably connect to one of your providers local access numbers through that line. Some times, hotels have ethernet connections, which means that you would have to have an ethernet cable with you to use that connection.
Hope this helps.

For dialup, you just plug a phone cord into your laptop and open the connection wizard. Your modem should know to look to the right port for a dial tone.

If your laptop doesn't have a phone jack built into it you will have to purchase a PCMCIA card that is a modem. Then you will have to purchase a dial-up package from an ISP.
