My laptop's CD/DVD-RW drive has been acting really funny. I'd call someone to fix my computer but it's strange that it just happened all of a sudden. Whenever I put a CD or DVD in the drive, the computer makes a weird humming noise like it's trying to read the disk and then gives up. The computer then says that there isn't anything in the drive. I don't know if I need to repair the drive or if it's something I can fix myself.

The lens reader might have a piece of dust on it. It's a circle with a plastic covering inside the CD tray. Get a good can of dust blaster to try to remove it. There is a CD cleaner that comes with a CD with small brushes on it to remove lint from this lens reader. If it still doesn't work, then Best Buy and Tiger Direct have some good replacments.

You might need a new drive. I had to replace a drive because it could no longer burn cds. However, there have been days when my computer wouldn't recognize cds in the drive, especially if they were blank cd-r's, but then the problem always magically fixed itself with time.

maybe your CD/DVD-RW lens where burned or bubbled up due to heat that the lens is creating. try also to open up the cd drive case and check it if a dust is build up on the lens, thats why the lens cant read the disc, it even spins up fast and it does not read a data on it. if the lens is burned up, take the drive off and replace it.

Try blowing out the cd drive with compressed air and buy a cd cleaner. Mine does this when it gets too dusty to read.

if your computer is acting funny, you should play along and laugh each time it calls a joke...

...may need some TLC
