Siddhartha Gautama (the thin one) was from India and not considered the only Buddha. The term "Buddha" means "the awakened one" and therefore anyone who becomes awakened can be considered a Buddha. The larger Buddha is known in English as "the laughing Buddha" and is popular for being friendly. His image is based on a Chinese monk. Many people rub is round belly for good luck.
If you ever have the chance to visit a Buddhist temple, you will see that there are many more Buddha's to discover and learn from.

Lost in translation gives you the clue! There have been more than 1 Buddha, so they are different people!!
; )
Here in Japan, the fat one is called Daruma, that's the Japanese way of saying his actual name - Dharma. He was Indian, as you can tell from his name. He was the founder of Zen Buddhism, so you don't often see other Buddha represented around here!
There were a variety of fat Buddha though, and skinny ones too..! So the ones you refer to could be anyone!
Daruma is normally portrayed meditating, and his image has come to be almost like a Weeble (if you know what they look like!) He's gone from this

to this

He was famous for sitting meditating in a mountain cave for 9 years!

It depends greatly on where that Buddha came from. The thicker Buddha comes from China where, at that time, the thicker person was more attractive. The thinner one is probably more accurate to what the real Buddha looked like, that's because it came from India. And certain Buddhist statues mean certian things, like 'happiness' or 'love'.

Well the fat Buddha was the Buddha as he lived under the Clinton administration, where he benefited from the abundance of what life had to offer him. The skinny Buddha is as he lived his life of poverty during the Bush administration.

What you can see really are only physical representations of Buddhas. In reality all Buddhas should "be" the same. If you get it you can see a Buddha, if you don't, then you can't see one.
