I agree with the last few answers EXCEPT that Joseph guy. If the forecast called for isolated thunderstorms and one popped up, that does not at all mean there will be hail, and the amount of rain depends on how much moisture is available for the storm in the atmosphere. One day here it called for isolated thunderstorms and when one did pop up, it brought very strong winds, large hail, and heavy downpours. I guarantee there was more than 2/10 in of rain. Another time it called for isolated thunderstorms we got a rumble of thunder and few sprinkles. "Isolated" and "Scattered" have nothing to do with the strength of the storm. So DO NOT listen to that Josephy guy. Isolated means maybe a stray one popping up and dissapearing and scattered means theres generally a better chance that you get one, but not guaranteed. Hope that helps!

Isolated thunderstorms are usually forcast when the chance for them is around 20%. If they develope they are few and far between. Scattered Thunderstorms are forcast when the chance increases to 30% to about 50%. This generally means (Floridians know well) that 30%-50% of the forcast area will see a thunderstorm and therefore, there are more storms around covering a larger area than the isolated forecast.

isolated thunderstorms occur in a specific area. Scattered thunderstorms could occur anywhere in the range of the storms.

Isolated thunderstorms well, are isolated, most areas are sunny, while only small portions get thunderstorms. Scattered thunderstorms cover more places.

When I say isolated thundershowers, it means a thunderstorm with about 2/10 of an inch of rain.
When I say scattered thunderstorms, it means a thunderstorm with small hail and about 2/10 of an inch of rain.
That sometimes happens, though seriously the person above answered the question well.
To Kyle below - I was kidding. That happened with 2 forecasts I recently made, but is not typical. I did say the guy above me basically had it right - at least according to the NWS definitions.

I'm not sure but I think isolated is confined to one spot whereas scattered are all over?

Isolated is in a particular location. Usually just amounting to one.
Scattered can span a larger region, and results are many.
