Generally speaking you cannot take the car out of Park without the key, when you use the override this allows you to do so. That is assuming you are referrng to the lock on the tansmision and how to override that. If not then listen to the other answers regarding overdrive.

Override Button

I think you mean the overdrive button.

When you're towing, you press that button to lock out the overdrive gear. This gives you better response and more torque, and keeps you from damaging the transmission from the heat buildup under load from towing. Plus, can actually give you better gas mileage while towing since the engine is theoretically in its powerband better and can more easily cope with the load. There's other ways to use it, but that's the main reason why they were included.

When you're not towing, keep the overdrive on. It lowers the RPM at which the engine cruises, thereby saving gas and reducing wear on the engine.

Now, why they have this function in a car rather than just in trucks, and why they decided to use a separate button rather than just another detent on the shifter, I'll never know.

That is good for when you are driving someplace with lots of hills, and you don't want the transmission to keep trying to shift into a higher gear. On a long, steep hill you might want to use it so you could have enough power to get to the top. The engine always wants to shift up. The override function is for anytime you want to prevent that from happening. Why does everyone think you are confusing it with overdrive? Dahhhhhhhhhhh.............

I think you are referring to the overdrive button, it allows the car to go into a higher gear at highway speeds 55-70mph, that way the car gets better gas mileage

over ride or over drive? i think you mean over drive. If its an automatic transmission it will always be in over drive, (always be in a higher gear when going over 60 to save of gas and engine wear and tear). the over drive button allows you to manually turn off that feature to gain more power when climbing steep hills, or when in the stop and go of inner city traffic.

You simply push the button while driving and the tranmission will down shift at its earliest convenience and not return to over drive until you push the button again or restart the car.

I think it's called overdrive. It's a higher gear ratio that gives better mileage but only at highway speed not in stop and go traffic.

It's not good on hills like melissa thinks. You use lower gears for that.

Over-Drive. It allows an automobile to cruise at sustained speed with reduced engine RPM, leading to better fuel economy, lower noise and lower wear.
