The egg. Chicken somehow evolved from reptiles who used to lay eggs as well. Chickens are just a genetic defect passed on that have survived the test of time. Of course that is just my opinion. This also happened over millions of years. A chicken didn't just hatch from a reptile.

Thinking of evolution, I think it was the egg. Think about it- organisms evolved into chickens ever-so-slowly. The organism that gave birth to the chicken egg wasn't actually a chicken. It was a genetic relative of the chicken. Therefore, it was the egg. Rather, the embryo inside of it.
