i have a 1966 283 small block chevy.i need to know if i can put a harmonic balancer from a later 305 or 350 on this engine. the balancer on the 283 is narrow compared too the other engines.

Yes you can install a newer / larger style balancer onto an older
283, although I'm not sure that there is anything to be gained by doing this. The newer style balancer will most likley cause the water pump and other driven accesories belt misalignment

I don't think that will work due to the fact that the balancer for the 305's and 350's are specific to those rotating engine assemblies (crankshafts, rods, and pistons). The components of the 283 will of course be much smaller than its counterparts, thus the smaller balancer.

I'm not sure of the O.D. of the crank but all the small blocks are internally balanced except for the 400 which is externally balanced.

it is not recamended to it will throw the balance of the crankshaft off.you need to go to napa auto parts and see if you can order one.
