I don't know what was said to him but I think he just lost it....It must have just been one of those things you do and then think to yourself did I just do that? I bet he's sorry now though!

I think Materazi said something very cruel to Zidane which caused him to react in the way he did. I'm not saying what Zidane did is acceptable, but he is, as you said 'one of the greatest players', so Materazi must of said something really bad to make such an exprienced player do what he did. I mean we all crack at some point and personally I can understand what Zidane did if it was because Materazi said something to him................

Materrazzi must have insulted his family or his race.
Certain Italian clubs are proudly fascist (Lazio). The French team is highly sensitive about racial issues especially after the comments made by extremist Jean-Marie LePen. Also the pressure of an entire (disgruntled) nation on your shoulders can cause you to act in an uncharacteristic way.
My French Mom put it best when she described ZZ as having commited 'suicide' in front of billions.

Zidane will be remembered as a great player who made a mistake and was punished in the worst way. history will show that italy won and the great game continues. There will be more contraversy ,sadness and joy. .. You just gotta love the sport, the passion, pain and misery. Then the joy of winning. to the french . thanks for the tough game .. Forza Italia

frustration comes out in different ways, unfortunately this was his. France has put him on a pedalstal when they asked him to come out of retirement to play. It was nice to see him leave with his head hung low. This was the 3rd altercation he has had in 8 years, (the 2nd had butt). It's too bad for his team because he is the captian and is suppose to set the example. FORZA ITALIA!!!!1

Give him a break he did it RIGHT
he's no god, he's human, i'm glad he did not compromise and knocked down this stupid racist italian. And that a lesson in my opinion: however good you may be you're still weak enough in front of tensions. ...he doesn't care, he'still the best player in the world and that how he's gonna be remembered by smart people who are not willing to let themeselves insulted this way.

The poor bugger was probably tired and was also probably feeling the pressure, not only that it was his final match of his career and to have what it looked like matarazzi having a word to him obviously took it's toll on him and therefore done what he did.

Because Materazzi deserved it. He had verbally abused Zidane. Zidane should have done something more viciously to him.

He let his emotions get the best of him and did a bonehead thing. I think he was also a little pissed off after having his header deflected by Buffon too, that was an awesome play.
