We have propped up the branches, pared down some fruit, and are considering pruning some branches. We just want to do what is best for the tree. It is only 3 years old, so I'm wondering if the tree is too young to support so much fruit.

Thanks

If the wood seems nice and springy and strong you've probably done enough. If the branches are cracking and oozing you'll want to prune them (seek more guidance for this, pruning a young tree correctly and according to your desires for its shape, function, health and stature is really important) as you harvest. The load will stimulate the tree to be stronger but if it disturbs you and you don't like the look of a groaningly loaded tree, you may want to have shorter branches. Find some good pie, pudding and drink recipes...lemon and milk bath is an old favorite...

Lemon branches are pretty strong, but if you think they are still in jepordy, pare down some more fruit, especially if ripe enough to pick. Do not leave ripe fruit on tree, just too heavy. How heavy do you water? May be watering too much. Once a week should be plenty, 1 inch of water.

I think that's the answer the youth of the tree cant handle the weight of the fruit try to eliminate at least 80 percent on the start of the growing season until the tree is strong enough to support the harvest.....Good Luck

Yes it is. Remove as much fruit as you can and prune several of the branches to the point that the tree appears to be balanced.

We have a tree, the branches come down to the ground with lemons on them, but we just let them do.

Citrus trees do this. Completely normal. If it is unattractive, you can always "stake" the branches individually.
