The split will not re-unite, but in time the nail will grow out as good as new. It will probably take several months, depending on your age. Keep the nail well trimmed and protected from further abuse to keep the split from propagating.

Okay... here is the deal. Most people's split nails grow back just fine. I've had many a nail disaster that has grown out. BUT! When I was a child I fell on the concrete and split my big toenail. It permanently split, and now where it had split skin has grown in between. It has been like that since I was around 6 years old now. I went to a nail specialist with my father because he too had a split nail that hadn't healed in years (on his finger). The doctor said with surgery he'd have a 1 in 3 chance of the nail growing back normally and he looked at mine and said there was nothing he or anyone could do about it. He said that the nail had not just split, but the nail bed had split such that I now have two nail beds separated by skin. He found it fascinating and said he hadn't seen many cases like it, so it's probably rare. But I just wanted to inform you that sometimes these things do not grow back normally, like my big toe, which I used to be very self-conscious of, but now have come to grips with it.

In the end if yours does not grow back normally just remember it's just a nail and things could be a lot worse.

You could just cover it with a bandage and wait for it heal because it, but the nail will grow in layers that are uneven with the rest of your nail. I suggest you go to the doctor so he can remove the fractured nail and allow a new, healthy one to grow.

From experience, as your nail grows out, it will grow back together....but it will take a while. i would suggest keeping it covered (ex: bandaid) so that you do not catch it on something.
